Medtronic employs 4,000 people across Ireland

Medtronic, a medical device company, is closing its customer care centre in Dublin, creating a major doubt over the 175 jobs there.

Staff at the company were understood to have been told yesterday that the company’s customer care centre was likely to be shut by next June, according to the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), which represents workers at the customer care centre in Cherrywood in Dublin.

Management at the company say that they are not eliminating jobs at their Dublin base and instead relocating them. Employees have been invited to apply for the overseas posts, but many workers are unwilling to move.

That move, however, will not affect the sales, commercial, and finance teams based at Cherrywood.

Ian McArdle of the CWU called on management at the company to engage with employees and said that workers are entitled to “immediate, frank and constructive discussions with the company”.

The merger prompted a review of the firm, which has led to the current decision to relocate the Cherrywood jobs to other European countries.

American firm Medtronic paid almost €50bn to buy Dublin-based surgical supplies group Covidien in June last year, making them this country’s biggest firm.

The company now employs about 4,000 people in Ireland and has locations all over Ireland, including a major plant in Galway, as well as sites in Athlone, Galway and Tullamore.
