Two companies announced its plans to create 265 new jobs across Galway and Athlone.

A courier company in Athlone has announced it is to create 200 jobs, including 70 to be filled between now and Christmas, while a medical devices company is to create 65 jobs in Galway.

A €13m expansion by DPD Ireland will see the company’s sorting facility double in size, enabling it to increase its daily handling capacity to 150,000 parcels. The company is looking for sorting technicians, drivers and administrative staff.

Meanwhile, Phenox, a German company, is to open a manufacturing facility in Galway city next year. The company makes vascular devices which are used in the treatment of aneurysms and strokes. It will set up its Irish operation at the Ballybrit Business Park on the eastern side of the city.

The company is in the process of fitting out a premises there and hopes to be up and running in early 2016.

The jobs will be in manufacturing, research, sales and support, and will be filled over five years.

Phenox says the expansion will allow it to grow its share in the US and other international markets, as well as supporting its existing European operations. The company was established in 2005 and currently employs 130 people in Germany.

Details of the expansion will be announced by Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton, who is in Galway for a number of events today.

Later, he will open a new manufacturing facility at Medtronic medical technology plant.

That company employs more than 2,000 people in Galway and the latest investment at its Innovation Centre is seen as a further boost to the med-tech sector in the west.
