Scotland’s Manufacturing Industry
Once boasting the most sophisticated shipbuilding industry in the world, the manufacturing sector in Scotland has changed rapidly in recent years and, following a period of sharp decline in the 1980s and 1990s, it has now been regenerated and successfully diversified.
The manufacturing sector in Scotland has an output value of over £18 billion and supports 195,000 jobs (7% of Scotland’s workforce), according to the Regional Manufacturing Outlook 2025 report from Make UK and BDO. The food and drink industry is the largest subsector accounting for 31.5% of all manufacturing output followed by pharmaceuticals at 9.1% and metal products at 7.9%.
Headed by Scotch whisky, the Scottish beverage sector is home to well-known brands such as Johnnie Walker, Glenfiddich, Heineken, Irn Bru and BrewDog. Scotland generates 10% of the UK’s total exports of goods. Accounting for 55% of sales, the EU is Scotland’s largest export market followed by Asia & Oceania (16%) and North America (14%)
The Government of Scotland is committed to continuing to improve productivity and increase investment in the manufacturing industry, as a means of helping to redress regional imbalances, and in order to grow the Scottish economy. The Scottish Government has invested heavily to support and develop the manufacturing sector and to promote advanced manufacturing technologies and processes.
Initiatives such as the development of the National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland (NMIS) and the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC) are helping to drive innovation, establish links with academia and encourage businesses to harness new technologies to enhance efficiency.
Challenges
The Scottish manufacturing industry and its associated supply chain are facing the ongoing challenge of adapting to the disruptive changes generated by the digital revolution and the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ (Industry 4.0). This upheaval is creating both obstacles and opportunities for manufacturers and their supply chain operators, who must evolve accordingly by adopting new technologies and skill sets.
New approaches and technology have been introduced in recent years that have created significant organisational and process improvements for manufacturers. Indeed, the aim of the Conference & Exhibition is to showcase such innovative approaches and technologies.
The layout of the Scotland Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition is intended to maximise the opportunity for delegates to network and make new contacts. With its comprehensive programme of free workshops and key note speakers combined with exhibitors displaying the latest technological solutions available, the event is intended to provide something of interest and value for all visitors.
