Card payment provider BOI Payment Acceptance (BOIPA) and the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) entered a partnership that will see BOIPA become the preferred payments platform for the LVA’s 600 Dublin pubs and bars ahead of the busy festive season., it was announced on Tuesday.

Cashless transactions in Ireland are currently valued at over €35 billion. Both merchants and consumers have been quick to recognise the convenience of contactless payment, which allows virtually instantaneous purchases of up to €30 with a quick tap of the card.

Chief Executive of the Licensed Vintners Association Donall O’Keefe, said, “Costs associated with card payments are significant for a big majority of our members. Through this partnership with BOI Payment Acceptance our members will now get a very competitive offering and backed up with a great support infrastructure.”

The LVA, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2017, represents 85 percent of all pubs and bars in the Dublin and Bray region, who together sell a quarter of all licensed alcohol in Ireland.

LVA member, John Gleeson of Gleeson’s of Booterstown, said: “In the last two years, cashless has become the preferred method of payment for our customers. With contactless technology, we’re now able to serve more customers in a shorter amount of time, enjoy reduced cash handling costs and minimise our vulnerability to theft as a result of having less cash on the premises. For our punters, this Christmas, contactless means faster service and less time spent queuing at the bar for drinks.”
