biomassBord na Móna says it has secured planning permission from Limerick Co Council for a €20m smokeless fuel plant in the port village of Foynes, which will create 60 jobs when operational.

Around 140 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project.

The facility, which is to be built on Bord na Móna’s existing site, will manufacture up to 150,000 tonnes of smokeless and biomass home heating fuels.

The company said it plans to substantially increase its range and supply of smokeless fuels to the Irish market.

Commenting on the announcement Bord na Móna Head of Fuels Eddie Scaife said: “It’s good news generally for air quality in Ireland that we will be able to meet the future demand for smokeless, cleaner and greener fuels.

“Consumers will be able to choose Irish manufactured fuels with lower emissions,” he added.

Bord na Móna said it is “shovel ready to start construction” and the new facility will allow it to meet market demand for smokeless fuel when the 2017 ban on smoky coal comes into place.

Separately, RSA Insurance has officially launched its new Galway operations centre in Knocknacarra following the creation of 50 new jobs.

The new employees join 100 existing RSA staff from combined Ballybrit and Liosban Business Park offices in the new state-of-the-art office.

RSA recruited people for positions including; credit controllers, training and development, personal lines underwriters, personal operations team leads, and claim handlers in Galway.
