The AIM Centre, in partnership with AbbVie and Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo, has successfully introduced the VEX Robotics programme to primary schools across Sligo, Leitrim, North Mayo, and South Donegal. This initiative is focused on providing hands-on STEM education to equip students with practical skills and foster an interest in engineering and technology.

CEO of AIM, Julie Dowling, highlighted the importance of engaging young minds in STEM at an early age to build the skills pipeline needed for future industries. “We are delighted to relaunch the VEX Robotics program in the Northwest region. The skills these students develop are crucial in sparking their interest in engineering and other STEM related subjects. It’s amazing to see their creativity and problem-solving skills develop through robotics.”

This latest initiative reflects AbbVie’s longstanding commitment to the promotion of science education and associated technical skills across the region. It also emphasises the important role that industry can play in highlighting the wide variety of career options available to students who study STEM and the positive impact these careers can have on society.

David Mulligan of ATU Sligo expressed confidence in the programme’s potential to advance students’ technical abilities, looking ahead to the regional finals at ATU Sligo on 31st January, and the opportunity for local teams to participate in national finals in MTU Cork, and international competitions in Dallas, Texas.

In this pilot year, nearly 100 students participated, working with their teachers and AIM Centre representatives to design, build, programme, and operate robots for a competition that required precision, teamwork, and problem-solving. Teacher training and workshops were provided to ensure effective delivery and engagement in schools. The competition setting involved a challenging four-goal arena, pushing students to apply technical skills in a competitive environment.

AIM, AbbVie and ATU aims to expand this programme, reinforcing their role in advancing technical education in the region and contributing to the development of Ireland’s next generation of engineers.
