Warburtons, the UK’s largest independent bakery group, has been granted planning permission to build a new £20 million bakery in Lancashire. The new facility, which will make products such as wraps and Sandwich Thins, will be constructed adjacent to Warburtons’ existing factory at Billington Road in Burnley.

The development is expected to result in the creation of 60 new jobs and to come on stream early next year. The existing site at Burnley currently employs 250 people.

According to Warburtons, the planned expansion reflects growth in the ‘alternative sandwich’ market.

“We recognise that consumer needs and tastes are changing and we must ensure we are fit to meet their needs, now and into the future,” points out Neil Campbell, Warburtons managing director of Warburtons.

The new plant will be able to produce an average of 5,500 products per hour. Warburtons operates similar plants in Bristol and Bolton.
